Also spelled  Misnagid (Hebrew: Opponent),  plural  Mitnaggedim, or Misnagidim,   member of a group of tradition-minded Jews who vigorously opposed the mid-18th-century Hasidic movement of eastern Europe when it threatened to encompass large numbers of Jews.
